Manager's Memo

Manager’s Memo - for the week ending August 13, 2010

Galloway to Lead Association: Doug Galloway of CenturyLink has been selected as chairman of the governing body of MTIA for 2010-2011. Galloway's selection was made by the board of directors during the association's annual conference held this week in Branson. He will also continue to serve as chairman of the association's legislative affairs committee. Galloway has served on the MTIA board since 2006.

With the merger of CenturyTel and EMBARQ, Galloway assumed the responsibilities of senior legislative affairs manager for CenturyLink's south-central region. He began his career in telecommunications 30 years ago and has held management positions in public affairs, marketing and governmental affairs in several Midwestern states. Prior to his career in telecom, Galloway was a television news director. He and his wife Cathy have three grown children and reside in Jefferson City.

Santhuff and Babbitt Move to Leadership Posts: Don Santhuff, general manager of Steelville Telephone Exchange, has been elevated to first vice chairman of the MTIA board of directors. Ross Babbitt, president of McDonald County Telephone Company, has been selected by his peers to serve as the association's second vice chairman and secretary-treasurer. Both will serve in their respective officer positions until next August.

Congratulations and our sincere thanks to all of our volunteer leaders for their service to the association.

Missouri Nets $82 Million in Broadband Stimulus Funds: A number of projects proposed by Missouri ILECS, CLECs and wireless providers were among the 126 broadband awards recently announced by the RUS. The agency announced awards August 4 in 38 states totaling $1.2 billion.

Missouri companies received a total of $82 million, including more than $32 million awarded to MTIA member companies Grand River Mutual Telephone Corporation, Orchard Farm Telephone Company (TDS) and Windstream Communications. More awards from the federal broadband stimulus program are anticipated by the end of September.

Jarrett to Continue Service on PSC: PSC Commissioner Terry Jarrett lost a bid to become a Cole County circuit judge in the August 3 Republican primary. Commissioner Jarrett, who previously served as presiding commissioner of the Missouri Administrative Hearing Commission, lost a close primary race to Jefferson City attorney Daniel Green. Green will face incumbent Paul Wilson in the November general election. Commissioner Jarrett was appointed to a six-year term on the Missouri Public Service Commission by Governor Matt Blunt on September 11, 2007.
